Meat and art // South America Photo Diary // Day 2

Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA

Lunch at Las Cabras. You know why the doorway is painted red? Because this is the gateway to vegetarian hell. Thankfully for me, I'm a proud, super hungry carnivore and this place was like as close to meat heaven as you could possibly get.

We had the parilla completa which is almost a whole dead cow, intestines and all. It was the most delicious dead cow I have ever had. Argentinian beef really is something.

Blood sausage.

Malba museum is the next stop. It's a beautiful modern building housing some incredible contemporary art, mostly by Argentinian artists.

There's a real emphasis on material and how certain types can be utilised in creative and unexpected ways.

On the second level, there was also a temporary exhibition showcasing Leon Ferarri's confronting and highly conceptual work. His work involves the appropriation of religious images alongside images depicting sex and war. There was a really interesting piece that showed an image of the Pope raising his hand superimposed on an artwork depicting violence and war.

I really wished I had more time to visit the numerous art and design museums scattered all over the city. As a design student, I'm putting Buenos Aires on my list of 'Possible places to live and work in' which makes sense since UNESCO has recently declared Buenos Aires as a City of Design.

Monkey Magic

Probably the most satisfying meal I've had for a long time. Every time a dish was gobbled up I had this really inappropriate urge to lick the plates clean. Yes, I'm classy. And no I did not.

I've also been experimenting with editing techniques on Photoshop to give my photos have a certain mood. Mood. I feel like I use this word a lot here.

City Extra for Day One

Spent the first day of the year with the family at City Extra, right across the Bridge when only several hours prior, it was virtually on fire from the New Year's fireworks display.

Their menu was in a cool newspaper format and I chose
the 'journo burger' which is the perfect way to end
my journalism 'career' (I transferred away from my journalism degree and starting my design degree this year).

We also got a last glimpse of the never-ending rainbow which
was the centrepiece on the Harbour Bridge for this year.

Hope everyone had an amazing New Year celebration.

The Sweet Spot

Red And Yellow Macaroons at The Sweet Spot

  So there's a place near
  where I live called
  'The Spot'
  and there's a
  coffee/cake/pastry shop there called
  'The Sweet Spot'

  They had rows of
  scrumptious looking cakes.
It took a while for me
  and my friend to decide.

  I had the banana,
  she had the raspberry.
  And we both had
  deliciously frothy
  cappuccinos paired
  with a macaron.

  First time I tasted macarons.
  Yes, I know.
  Where have I been?

  Really did hit the spot.
  (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Three Reasons: Tampopo

Three Reasons are a series of posts about films I love and the three reasons why I love them. Inspired by the Criterion Collection's own video series. I hope you check out the films in these series. If you are a lover of film, these are not to be missed!

Directed by Juzo Itami
In this humorous paean to the joys of food, the main story is about trucker Goro who rides into town like a modern Shane to help Tampopo set up the perfect fast-food noodle restaurant. Woven into this main story are a number of smaller stories about the importance of food. (Synopsis from IMDB.com)

Tampopo opens with a funny address to the audience warning us not to crumple our crisp packets while watching the movie. Food and film are meant to be given the concentration they deserve. A lovely message, they should play this clip at the beginning of every movie. I personally try not to indulge in food while watching a movie but a word of warning for this film: make sure you are within the vicinity of a ramen restaurant after seeing this. You will crave for it like nothing else. Trust me.

The majority of the film is spent in some kind of a restaurant and the scenes range from the hilariously comedic to being akin to a Western movie.

One of the final sequences is a taste test that rivals an episode of Masterchef in terms of suspense.

What are your reasons?

Mizuya

One of my favourite spots to eat in Sydney: the Mizuya Japanese restaurant where you order your food from a touchscreen! A short wait later and your food magically appears.

Now the touchscreen is both a blessing and a curse. It's extremely convenient and makes the whole ordering process much faster BUT it does make you order more than what you need. Especially when you're still waiting for your first order and you start eyeing other things on the menu and you end up ordering more things. It's like online shopping - it's so fast that you don't have time for the 'do I really need this?' internal dialogue.

I went there with my friend Nycel a while back. I had the tempura plate and takuyaki and she had the chicken curry and the crab.

I'll be back there soon!
